Boost performance. Increase uptime. Slash costs and complexity.
Optimized for the mainframe like no other Linux OS. In 2000, IBM and SUSE brought Linux to the mainframe. Now SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z is the #1 choice for Linux on IBM mainframes.

Enterprises have turned to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z to run mission-critical applications on IBM mainframes since 2000.

Why do more businesses choose SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z than any other Linux platform for running workloads on IBM mainframes? Customer-driven innovation, an 80 percent market share, and an impressive list of supported applications make it the logical choice for businesses like yours.

Customer-driven Innovation

SUSE, IBM and Marist College began collaborating in 1999 to port the Linux operating system to the mainframe. Since then, we have focused on optimizing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z to run seamlessly with System z hardware and the z/VM hypervisor. Since then, we have focused on optimizing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z to run seamlessly with System z hardware and z/VM software. From Day One, our goal has been making sure you get the most out of all your System z resources.

SUSE has worked with IBM on Linux for System z more closely—and much longer—than any other company. By collaborating with IBM engineering and our mutual customers, SUSE is typically at the forefront of introducing new features for System z into the mainstream Linux kernel.

Some of these latest advancements based on customer requests include:

  • Linux CPU node affinity: This feature improves system performance by scheduling processes to the optimal node where the CPU is associated, exploiting the System z CPU node topology.

  • Vertical CPU management: With this feature, you can switch between horizontal and vertical CPU polarization via a sysfs attribute. As a result, you achieve maximum performance from System z servers by maintaining awareness of the server's NUMA capabilities.

  • Dynamic add /remove: Dynamic add/remove of CPUs and memory allows you to adjust the resources of a Linux guest under z/VM while it is running. This means a pool of CPUs can be allocated dynamically to a Linux guest and the CPUs can be used as needed. As a result, uptime and availability of the Linux guest and applications increase.

  • Suspend/resume: With suspend and resume, you can stop a SUSE Linux Enterprise Server instance and continue its operations later. When an instance is suspended, data is written to a swap partition. The resume process uses this data to continue the Linux instance from where it left off when suspended. A suspended Linux instance does not require memory or processor cycles, giving you better performance, resource utilization and power savings.

  • Cross-architecture debugging: Now you can analyze System z core dumps on an x86 system, eliminating the need for a duplicate System z server. This simplifies systems management and keeps costs under control.

80% Market Share

Our longstanding development of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z with IBM means businesses have been running our platform for the IBM mainframe in data centers for over a decade. In 2000, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z entered the market as the first enterprise-ready, commercially supported and maintained Linux operating system tailored for IBM mainframes—five years before any competitors comparable offer actually hit the market.

With an 80 percent share of the market, our operating system delivers the reliability, availability and serviceability that mainframe owners demand. Today, it's the overwhelming choice of organizations that run enterprise-class software on Linux for System z.
